The German capital obviously exerts a great attraction on undergraduate students. Berlin is the most popular of all German federal states, as the Federal Statistical Office tells.

In 2017, more people from other federal states moved to Berlin to study there when first year students moved away from there.

But other cities and federal states are in high demand. After Berlin with a gain of 4100 freshmen followed Hamburg with 3800 freshmen. Behind them come Hesse with a plus of 2300 and Saxony with a gain of 2100 freshmen.

According to the statisticians, these federal states recorded the biggest losses among undergraduates on the bottom line:

  • Lower Saxony (minus 6900),
  • Schleswig-Holstein (minus 4900)
  • Brandenburg (minus 2800)
  • Rhineland-Palatinate (minus 2000)

However, only new students who have obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany were considered.
