Participants in a wedding parade apparently took part in an illegal car race in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg.

A 19-year-old had an accident with his high-powered Mercedes, the police said.

According to an initial assessment, the vehicle, which cost 170,000 euros, was a total loss.

The driver therefore remained uninjured.

The young man was driving south on the B75 in a column with at least seven other cars, including a white Lamborghini, on Sunday.

The vehicles were noticed with hazard lights on, risky driving maneuvers and excessive speed, it said.

Between the Wilhelmsburg and Kornweide junctions, the 19-year-old reportedly left the road with his high-powered car and crashed into the guardrail.

The police confiscated the young man's driver's license and initiated criminal proceedings for illegal vehicle racing.

Investigations are also underway against seven other drivers whose personal details the officers were able to determine at the scene of the accident.

The drivers of other vehicles allegedly involved, including the white Lamborghini, had already left when the officers arrived, it was said.

The police are asking witnesses for information.
