The essentials of the day before

  • Hezbollah announced that it had bombed an Israeli military base in response to raids which targeted eastern Lebanon, for the first time since the start of the war in Gaza, leaving two dead in the ranks of the powerful Lebanese formation.

  • The government of the Palestinian Authority, which sits in the occupied West Bank, submitted its resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas who accepted it, the presidency said in a statement.

  • The Israeli army has presented a plan for the "evacuation" of civilians from "combat zones" in the Gaza Strip, the Prime Minister's office announced.

  • The Human Rights Council meets this Monday for six weeks in Geneva in the middle of the conflict in the Middle East.

More than a hundred leaders or ministers are expected until Wednesday.

  • Joe Biden said on Monday that he was “hopeful” that a ceasefire would take place in Gaza “by next Monday”

  • The Hamas Ministry of Health announced on Monday a new toll of 29,782 people killed in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

Please note: the number of victims is provided by the Hamas-led Gaza Ministry of Health.

The ministry collects information provided by hospitals in the enclave and by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Health Ministry in Gaza does not indicate how the Palestinians were killed, whether by Israeli airstrikes and/or barrages or failed Palestinian rocket attacks.

It describes all victims as victims of "Israeli aggression" and also does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

During the four wars and numerous skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, United Nations agencies regularly cited Health Ministry figures in their reports.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Palestinian Red Crescent also use these figures.

In the aftermath of previous episodes of war, the United Nations Humanitarian Office published casualty figures based on its own research into medical records.

The UN figures largely agree with those of the Gaza Ministry of Health, with a few differences.
