CAN 2024: the Senegalese disappointed, but not dejected, after their elimination by Ivory Coast

Exited from the CAN by Ivory Coast (1-1, tab: 4-5) this Monday, January 29, the Senegalese appeared fatalistic after the meeting. Aware that the match could also go to their side, they congratulate their tormentors and remain proud of their journey despite everything.

From our special correspondent in Yamoussoukro,

There were no reactions of disappointment from the Senegalese after

the defeat on penalties

against Ivory Coast in the round of 16 of CAN 2024. Not even regrets, assures Idrissa Guèye who entered the game five minutes after the Ivorians equalized. “

There are no regrets, we gave everything

,” says the Senegalese midfielder.

A winner was needed, and it was Ivory Coast.

Unfortunately, we're the ones going out today. Congratulations to them.

A fine player, Pape Guèye, who missed this match, recognizes that the Elephants' victory is not undeserved. “

We gave everything, but that’s football. Ivory Coast woke up today, unfortunately for us. We are disappointed, but proud of our performance

.”

“I hope they will go to the end”

Fatalist, captain Kalidou Koulibaly is of the same opinion as his teammates. “

We lost on penalties, it’s a shame because there was a way to win on the pitch. We gave a good performance, we showed a lot of things, but it wasn't enough. I think the penalty shootout was the only way to beat us, because with the content we showed, I think we were superior to this team. It’s football, that’s how it is

. »

We wanted to go further

,” laments goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. For this, it would have been necessary to “

kill

” the match with a second goal before the Ivorians equalized. “

Controlling the match was not enough

,” said Lions coach Aliou Cissé.

After the opening of the score, the team lost track. This Ivorian team could have played for two hours without scoring a goal except from set pieces, which is what happened.

 »

We will have to digest this elimination and “

quickly get back up

”. In the meantime, Idrissa Guèye wishes the best journey to his opponents of the day: “

I hope they will go to the end, that's all I wish them. It's a competition that takes place at home, everyone buried them, today they are here. I hope they will do what it takes to get to the end.
