At the Altmark Theater in Stendal near Magdeburg, three actors suffered chemical burns to their faces during a premiere. They were taken to a hospital on Saturday evening, the police announced on Sunday.

The actors rubbed a mixture of an ash-like substance and water on their faces during the performance. As a result, all three suffered chemical burns on their faces.

On Saturday evening, the theater announced via Instagram that the premiere of “Das Große Heft” had to be canceled after the break due to an incident. No details were given.

According to the police, rehearsals had already been carried out with an ash mixture the day before the premiere. There were no injuries. During the performance, the three actors felt a burning sensation on their skin. There are said to be no visible injuries on the hands that also came into contact with the mixture.

“A possible chemical reaction with the make-up used cannot be ruled out,” said the police. There is suspicion of negligent bodily harm. The ashes and the make-up were confiscated.

“The Big Booklet” is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by the Hungarian author Ágota Kristóf. The theater describes it as one of the most powerful and at the same time disturbing examinations of the question of what it means to be human in times of war.
