The essentials of the day before

  • Tank fire against a building of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in Khan Younes left at least "nine dead and 75 injured" on Wednesday.

  • The Israeli army said it had "surrounded" Khan Younes and called on the local population to leave for Rafah, further south, but the fighting made travel dangerous.

  • The American armed forces announced that they had carried out two new strikes on the Houthis in Yemen during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, specifying that they had targeted sites linked to the launch of anti-ship missiles towards the Red Sea.

  • Yemen's Houthis fired "three missiles against two ships" in the Red Sea on Wednesday, a White House spokesperson said.

  • The Hamas Ministry of Health announced a new toll showing 25,700 people killed, mostly women, adolescents and children in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

  • In a recording obtained by Israeli Channel 12, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deemed the mediator role of Qatar, the country where the political leadership of Hamas is based, “problematic”.

Please note: the number of victims is provided by the Hamas-led Gaza Ministry of Health.

The ministry collects information provided by hospitals in the enclave and by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Gaza Health Ministry does not indicate how the Palestinians were killed, whether by Israeli airstrikes and/or barrages or missed Palestinian rocket attacks.

It describes all victims as victims of "Israeli aggression" and also does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

During the four wars and numerous skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, United Nations agencies regularly cited Health Ministry figures in their reports.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Palestinian Red Crescent also use these figures.

In the aftermath of previous episodes of war, the United Nations Humanitarian Office published casualty figures based on its own research into medical records.

The UN figures largely agree with those of the Gaza Ministry of Health, with a few differences.
