Ahead of next month's planned investigation of the inside of the containment vessel at Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, drone operation training was held in Naraha Town, Fukushima Prefecture.

At the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, an investigation is underway inside the containment vessel in order to remove fuel debris, which is a mixture of melted nuclear fuel and surrounding structures due to the accident, and a drone investigation will begin in the middle of next month. will be held for the first time.

Prior to this, drone pilot training was held at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency's facility in Naraha Town and was open to the press.

The drone is small, approximately 20 centimeters in diameter and weighs 185 grams, has a built-in camera, and is an improved version of an aircraft used for boiler inspections. The plan is to insert it into the containment vessel through piping.

During the training, we used a model that reproduced the real thing to check the operation methods and flight routes, as well as operating the robot that sends radio waves to the drone.

In the investigation of Unit 1, damage to the base of the containment vessel has so far been confirmed using underwater robots, and TEPCO is using drones to understand the situation inside the containment vessel in more detail and carry out the necessary tests to remove fuel debris. We want to collect information.
