At least 13 people have died in a fire in a school dormitory in central China's Henan province.

Authorities said Saturday morning that another person was injured in the fire in a school dormitory.

According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, firefighters were alerted to a fire in a dormitory at Yingcai School in Yanshanpu Village at 11 p.m.

"Rescue workers arrived quickly and the flames were extinguished at 11:38 p.m.," Xinhua reported.

No information on the identity of the victims

The authorities did not provide any information about the identities of the victims.

Accordingly, it was unclear whether students died in the accident on Friday evening.

The cause of the fire was initially unknown.

State television CCTV reported that the principal of the school in the village of Yanshanpu was taken into custody.

Lax security precautions

In China, deadly fires and other accidents continue to occur due to lax safety precautions.

In November, 26 people died in a fire at a coal company's office in northern China's Shanxi province.

In April, 29 people died in a fire in a hospital in the capital Beijing.
