Widespread rain and snow have begun, and the cold wave is coming over the weekend, and there is a chance of snow in the south!

The first round of widespread rain and snow in 2024 has been rolled out, and there is no shortage of heavy snowstorms in local areas. Due to the higher temperatures in the south, snowflakes are mostly found in the north. However, with the arrival of the cold wave of the Great Cold Season, there is also the possibility of snowfall in the south from this weekend to the beginning of next week, and the rain and snow dividing line will be pressed all the way south, or reach the Nanling area!

Yesterday, heavy snow or blizzards occurred in parts of central and eastern Shaanxi, southern Shanxi, northern Henan, and southwestern Shanxi, and Heze, Shandong Province suffered heavy snowfall.

Among them, the snowfall intensity in some areas of southwestern Shanxi, western Henan and eastern Shaanxi was rare in the same period, and the 24-hour cumulative precipitation in Wenxi, Yuanqu, Yongji, Hejin in Shanxi and Weinan, Huaxian, Lantian and Dali in Shaanxi all broke the local single-day precipitation record in January.

During the day today, snowflakes fell in parts of southern Hebei, western Shandong, Henan, northern Anhui, northern and central Hubei, and southern Shaanxi, and many places in the south were dominated by rainfall.

Three days from tomorrow, the rain and snow in the central and eastern parts will continue, the snowfall in the north will gradually decrease, and the rain in the south will continue to develop to the east, increase and strengthen, Hunan, Hubei to Anhui will have the strongest rain, and some areas will have heavy to heavy rain.

The cold wave is coming, and the snow falls to the south, and the rain and snow dividing line may reach the South Ridge

Due to the high temperature in the south, the precipitation in the current round of rain and snow is mainly rain, and the first snowflakes of 2024 have not been seen.

By the end of this week, temperatures will be higher than normal for most parts of the central and eastern regions. Like Zhejiang, Jiangxi and other places, the maximum temperature will hit 20 °C tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

Looking at this warm temperature, the south is going to have no chance of snow these days. But with the arrival of the cold wave of the Great Cold Season, the snow in the south is also brewing!

The medium-term forecast of the Central Meteorological Observatory shows that from the 20th to the 22nd, there will be a cold wave from west to east to affect China, and the temperature in most parts of the central and eastern regions will drop by 6~9 °C, of which the temperature in central Inner Mongolia, northern Shaanxi, western and northern North China will drop by 10~18 °C.

This weekend, there will be a clear reversal of warm and cold in most of the central and eastern regions, with temperatures turning lower in the north on Saturday and not cooling until Sunday in the south. After the cooling, the temperature 0°C line will be pushed south to the Nanling area.

Falling temperatures have also created favorable conditions for snowfall in the south. The latest forecast shows that there will be a change in the phase of precipitation from Jianghan to northern South China from Sunday, and sleet or snowfall may fall in most areas. The dividing line between rain and snow is even more likely to reach the South Ridge line.

However, at present, the forecast is still far away, and there are still variables, and the snowfall in the south should also pay attention to the warm and humid airflow and whether the temperature near the ground is low enough, and everyone should also pay attention to the nowcast.
