In Iceland, more than 200 sheep are to be rescued, which are still in danger after a volcanic eruption near the evacuated Icelandic town of Grindavík. As the Guardian reported, animal rights activists sounded the alarm after footage showed how expensive machines were rescued, but the sheep were not. The estimated 270 animals, which had not been fed or watered for several days, had not initially been classified as a priority. On Monday evening, a farmer and rescue workers were able to save 30 sheep on the outskirts of the city.

Grindavík, a fishing village in the southwest of the island, was evacuated for the first time before Christmas after the nearby Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted on 18 December. In the weeks that followed, some farmers apparently returned with their livestock. A major eruption on Sunday then forced residents to evacuate again.
