With his Emmy win on Monday, musician Elton John is the 19th winner of the "EGOT" award – an abbreviation for the four most important entertainment awards in the world: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The Brit has won the television award Emmy for his concert »Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium« as best entertainment special of the year.

The 76-year-old, who is currently recovering from knee surgery, did not attend the 75th Emmy Gala. The award was accepted on his behalf by producer Ben Winston.

In the course of his career, Elton John received five Grammy awards from the record industry, a Tony Award from New York's Broadway theaters for the music for the musical "Aida" and two Oscars for songs from the films "The Lion King" ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight") and "Rocketman" ("I'm going to Love Me Again").

The club he joins is quite exclusive: the 18 other people who have achieved an "EGOT" so far include Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend and, most recently, Viola Davis. The term probably goes back to the actor Philip Michael Thomas, who announced that he wanted to win the four awards within five years when he starred in "Miami Vice".
