After the discovery of a dead child in a car in Mittenwalde, Brandenburg, the mother has been provisionally arrested. This was announced by a police spokesman on Monday to the dpa news agency. According to initial investigations, the 40-year-old could be responsible for the death of the six-year-old boy.

The father of the family had reported his wife and their child missing on Sunday evening. Police, ambulance service and emergency doctor found the car early Monday morning at 1.52 a.m. on a small forest path in the Mittenwald district of Ragow. The dead child and the woman were lying inside. The 40-year-old is receiving medical care, it said.

According to a dpa photographer, the car was parked on a forest path near the A10 at the Schönefelder Kreuz. The road is surrounded by fields. The area on site was largely cordoned off. In addition to ambulances, forensic investigators were also on site.

An autopsy of the body is scheduled for Monday afternoon. Subsequently, the public prosecutor's office will decide on the application for an arrest warrant, according to the police spokesman.
