The blockbuster »Oppenheimer« has received no less than eight awards at the US Critics' Awards: The biopic about the inventor of the atomic bomb was awarded best film at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday. He also won awards in the categories of Directing, Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Cinematography, Film Score, Ensemble, Editing, and Visual Effects.

The film, which grossed one billion dollars (910 million euros), is becoming the clear favorite for the Oscars in March. Most recently, »Oppenheimer« also won important awards at the Golden Globes.

Accepting his award for directing, director Christopher Nolan thanked the critics. These helped to convince mainstream audiences "that a film about quantum physics and the apocalypse could be worth its time."

Despite the dominance of »Oppenheimer«, other films were also awarded in the other categories. Paul Giamatti was honored as best actor for his performance in "The Holdovers," while Emma Stone won the award for best actress for her role in the comedy "Poor Things."

Thus, Stone was preferred to the German actress Sandra Hüller, who was also nominated. But the legal drama »Anatomy of a Case« by French director Justine Triet, in which Hüller plays the leading role, won the award for best non-English-language film.

Award for »Ken«

The box-office hit film of the year, »Barbie«, has not yet been able to win top prizes this awards season. However, the film satire received awards at the Critics Choice Awards in the categories of Best Comedy, Screenplay, Costume, Makeup, and Song, among others.

In the latter category, »Barbie« was nominated three times. Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish were also shortlisted, but the critics' jury chose "I'm Just Ken," sung by occasional singer Ryan Gosling.

Gosling's somewhat confused reaction to the announcement of the award already made the rounds on social networks during the gala – it is decidedly meme-worthy. On stage, it was not Gosling who accepted the award, but songwriter Mark Ronson.

The Critics Choice Awards, selected by nearly 600 members of North America's largest film critics' organizations, are presented in Los Angeles. They also award prizes in television categories.

Here, the series »Succession«, which ended in 2023, was the winner of the evening. In addition to the award for best drama, Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook were also awarded for their leading roles. In the comedy categories, »The Bear« won four awards.
