Governor Koike of Tokyo has officially decided to eliminate the income limit for high school and metropolitan university tuition from the next academic year and make it virtually free.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been assessing the measures to be included in the budget proposal for the new fiscal year of Reiwa 6 by Governor Koike since the 5th, and on the 6th, the improvement of the educational environment and other matters were examined.

Afterwards, Governor Koike told reporters that she had formally decided to expand support for tuition fees for high schools and Tokyo metropolitan universities, both of which would be virtually free of charge by removing income restrictions.

As a
guideline, the income limit so far has been ▽ household income of less than 910.478 million yen for high school and ▽ household income of less than
10.910 million yen for Tokyo metropolitan university.

In addition, with regard to tuition fees at private junior high schools, which are subsidized by 555,<> yen per year, the income restriction that was based on a household income of less than <>.<> million yen will be abolished, and approximately <>.<> billion yen will be newly included in the budget proposal as necessary expenses for these expenses.

Governor Koike stated, "We will realize a Tokyo where children can choose their own career paths, regardless of their economic situation."

As for high school and university tuition, Osaka Prefecture is moving to gradually remove the income limit and make it free from the next academic year.
