What's currently worthwhile

How about a lot of money, sex and provocation to start the new year? That's the promise of »Saltburn« on Prime Video, which has already made a name for itself as a scandalous film in the USA. The story about two friends from different social worlds scores points by crossing boundaries. Director Emerald Fennell ("Promising Young Woman") obviously spent less work on the character drawing than on the "distribution of bodily fluids in the most original way possible," writes colleague Hannah Pilarczyk.

The biopic »Maestro« has already had a scandal on social media. In terms of content, however, the Netflix production strikes a more dignified tone. Bradley Cooper tries his hand at the life of the famous Leonard Bernstein as a leading actor and director. And he has set himself a lot of goals. It's a good thing that he concentrates mainly on Bernstein's affair-ridden relationship – and thus leaves the big stage to Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealegre.

"It's great how Mulligan plays the hurt of her character without ever making her seem petty jealous," writes Lars-Olav Beier in his review. The hoped-for finale could be the Oscar ceremony in spring.

What we're looking forward to (in January)

The movie »A Thousand and One« doesn't need big names. With a lot of empathy, newcomer A.V. Rockwell tells a special mother-son drama. The only familiar face is R&B singer Teyana Taylor in her acting debut. As homeless mother Inez, she kidnaps her son from his foster family. A struggle for survival begins in New York City in the 2023s and <>s, marked by gentrification, poverty and racism. After »A Thousand and One« was already shown in German cinemas in May <>, it can now be seen on Wow (Sky).

It is likely to be much louder in the new Apple TV+ series "Masters of the Air". Big names and blockbuster topics cavort here. The follow-up to the war series »Band of Brothers« (2001) and »The Pacific« (2010) was again produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The planes of the 100th Bomb Group, which dropped bombs on Nazi Germany during World War II, include Austin Butler ("Elvis") and Barry Keoghan ("Saltburn"). The trailer features dramatic visuals, glossy visuals and epic music. A little less feeling, but more action.

Instead of a group of men, »Expats« follows the perspectives of different women on a family tragedy. The events of the new Amazon series critically focus on a wealthy minority in Hong Kong: expats, i.e. families living abroad for work from wealthy, mostly Western countries. Nicole Kidman, who plays one of the main roles (a wealthy American woman), is said to have persuaded director and producer Lulu Wang ("The Farewell") to join the eight-episode project. Even the first episode is feature-length, and expectations are high.

Streaming tip from the archive

At the turn of the year, as we all know, you should take a look back. For Sandra Hüller, it was "a year the likes of which even stars like her probably only experience once," writes Hannah Pilarczyk in her portrait of the exceptional German actress. She was crowned the "Queen of Cannes" by the critics after triumphing there with two films: as the accused wife in "Anatomy of a Case" and as the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß in the British experimental film "Zone of Interest". Both received Golden Globe nominations. Hüller has just received the European Film Award and a US Film Critics' Award for Best Actress.

Reason enough to rummage a little into Hüller's cinematic past. »Requiem« (2006), for example, an exorcism drama set in the German provinces, in which Hüller played her first leading role, can currently be seen on Mubi. The tragicomedy »Toni Erdmann« (2016) is streaming on Netflix and Paramount+.
