AFCON 2024: Tunisia's list without Hannibal Majri, with Youssef Msakni

Manchester United attacking midfielder Hannibal Mejbri is absent from the final list of Tunisian players who will play in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d'Ivoire from January 13 to February 11, 2024, unveiled on Thursday by coach Jalel Kadri. The "old" Youssef Msakni is there.

Like most coaches, Jalel Kadri has chosen not to deprive himself of taking 27 players to Ivory Coast. But it will be without one of its key players, Hannibal Mejri, who has obviously declined the invitation. The 20-year-old, who returned from a loan spell from Birmingham last summer, has made just nine appearances in all competitions so far this season (one goal, no assists) under Erik ten Hag. "Hannibal told me that he doesn't feel ready for the AFCON because he is going through a difficult situation at the club," explained Jalel Kadri in a press conference, referring to the man who has 27 caps for the Carthage Eagles.

With the absence of Wahbi Khazri, who announced his international retirement in December 2022, Jalel Kadri will be able to count on Youssef Msakni who will play in his eighth Africa Cup of Nations after having his first in 2010. At 33 years old, the Tunisian striker and captain is likely to equal Cameroon's Rigobert Song's record in Ivory Coast.

Tunisia will play in Korogho in Group E along with Namibia, whom they will meet in their first match (16:17 January, <>:<> GMT), Mali and South Africa.

In the meantime, the Carthage Eagles will have a training camp in Tunis, with two friendly matches, against Mauritania (6 January) and Cape Verde (10 January).
