Queen Elizabeth II worried at the end of her life that she would die at her Scottish castle of Balmoral because of the complications it entailed for her funeral. "I think there was a time when she felt like things would be more difficult if she died at Balmoral," her daughter Princess Anne said in a documentary. "And I think we tried to persuade her that it shouldn't be part of the decision-making process," the Princess Royal added in the BBC film, which looks back at the year of King Charles III's coronation, which is due to air on December 26.

70 years on the throne

After 70 years on the throne, a record for the British monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II breathed her last on September 8, 2022 at her Scottish castle of Balmoral. Her death was followed by a period of national mourning with choreography painstakingly prepared over a long period of time, with a different organization if she died in one of her residences.

The monarch lived at the end of her life at Windsor Castle near London but used to spend her summers at Balmoral, where she rode horses and the family went hunting, or Christmas at Sandringham in the east of England.

After being laid on public display at St. Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, the Queen's coffin was flown to London on a military plane. The coffin was then laid into public viewing at Westminster Hall, the oldest chamber in the British Parliament, until the funeral on September 19. In the documentary, Princess Anne talks about the moment and the strange feeling of "relief" she felt when the crown was removed from the coffin, and "that responsibility transferred" to the new King Charles III.
