It's her year, there's no question about it, and in 2024 she will also make a noticeable contribution to shaping the film world: US director Greta Gerwig, who became famous across all genres this year with the megahit »Barbie«, will be jury president at next year's Cannes Film Festival. This was announced by the festival on Thursday morning.

After actress Olivia de Havilland in the 40s, she is only the second American to take on the role. The <>-year-old broke all records with »Barbie«. The choice was obvious, the festival president, Iris Knobloch, was quoted as saying. Gerwig embodies the "renewal of cinema".

»Universal language of film«

Gerwig described Cannes as "the pinnacle of what the universal language of film can be." In addition to »Barbie«, Gerwig's films include »Little Women« and »Lady Bird«. She became known for the screenplay and the leading role of »Frances Ha«.

The festival on the Côte d'Azur will take place for the 77th time next year – from 14 to 25 May.
