"I wouldn't be an actress today," says Hollywood star Angelina Jolie in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. When I started, there wasn't such an expectation of being so public and sharing so much."
Maybe she would still want to be on stage, according to the producer and actress. However, a life and career in Hollywood would rule her out in 2023.
After the divorce from Brad Pitt, the coverage of her even exceeded the excess that had long been achieved. The stress had become so great that her voice changed in 2018 during the filming of »Maleficent: Mistress of Evil«.
She was harassed by the press every time she left her home in Los Angeles. She had "no longer had a social life" because she hardly went out anymore.
"My body reacts very strongly to stress," Jolie said. "My blood sugar goes up and down. Six months before my divorce, I suddenly had Bell's palsy."
This is a one-sided facial paralysis, the cause of which is unknown in three-quarters of cases. The facial nerve in the bony facial canal swells, disrupting its function.
In some cases, a previous infection with the herpes simplex virus can be observed. But bacteria can also cause paralysis, as well as autoimmune diseases, injuries or tumors.
She doesn't read the tabloids' reports, Jolie said. By her own admission, she doesn't have anything new to say: "I've just been here so long and everything has been said."
Get out of L.A.
Jolie is therefore considering leaving Los Angeles and spending more time in Cambodia in the future. "That's part of what happened after my divorce," she told the Wall Street Journal. I have lost the ability to live and travel freely. I'll move when I can." Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is "not a healthy place." There is a lack of authenticity.
Since separating from Pitt, Jolie had made fewer films, and if so, it was only those that did not require long shoots. Her family has gone through a long healing process, she told Vogue magazine in September.
"Haven't been myself for ten years"
Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 after a physical altercation with her then-husband Brad Pitt allegedly occurred on a plane.
In a 2020 Instagram story, son Pax reportedly called his father, Brad Pitt, a "world-class asshole." Pitt is a "horrible person" and a "despicable person" without compassion, according to the 19-year-old's harsh criticism. The children would "tremble with fear" whenever their father faced them. Jolie had found Pax in an orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City in 2007 and adopted her. He had been abandoned as a newborn by his heroin-addicted biological mother.
In addition to Pax, the actors are also parents to Maddox, 22, Zahara, 18, Shiloh, 17, and Vivienne and Knox, both 15.
In her latest film, the biopic »Maria« by Chilean director Pablo Larraín, Jolie plays the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. The story focuses on the last years of the soprano's life, which she spent in seclusion in Paris.
These days she feels a little depressed, Jolie said now in the interview. "I feel like I haven't been myself for ten years. I don't want to get used to that."
