What's currently worthwhile

"Finally some TV magic," says director Dougie, after feigning the tears of a mother with cancer with a little water on his cheeks. He is filming a docusoap that aims to polish up the image of Whitney (Emma Stone) and her husband Asher (Nathan Fielder). The two main characters of the recently launched series »The Curse« want to present themselves as benefactors. With plenty of affected do-gooders, the couple plans to hide their business interests in a small New Mexico town. An unpleasant social satire unfolds. "It's Emma Stone's most daring work to date," writes colleague Oliver Kaever, who sings the praises of the terrific Hollywood actress.

»Deutsches Haus« on Disney+ dares much less. The series aims to show how the German culture of remembrance began in the 1960s with the Auschwitz trials. At the same time, German production shies away from the uncertainty that this should entail. The screenplay was written by Anette Hess, who became known and successful with the »Kuhdamm« series and »Weißensee«. In the podcast, she talks about how to write good scripts and how she came to terms with her own family's Nazi past.

What we're looking forward to (in December)

A few years later, the Leonard Bernstein biopic »Maestro« began – by and with Bradley Cooper. Amber is one of the most interesting figures in modern cultural history. If you don't know him, you've at least heard the music of the American composer and conductor. Not least his Broadway musical »West Side Story«. After »Maestro« premiered in Venice, it will be released on Netflix in December. The focus is not so much on the artist's work as on his relationship with Bernstein's wife of many years, Felicia, his homosexuality and the struggle for a life together. "I love too much, what can I say?" says Bernstein at one point.

Streaming tip from the archive

But streaming providers are also prepared for the faint-hearted in December. And because a little kitsch hasn't hurt anyone, especially at Christmas, it's time to watch the German winner of the international Emmys: "The Empress" on Netflix. "Please watch romantic gawking!" was the headline of Oliver Kaever's release of the drama series. It's not terribly new or interesting, he says. But sometimes it doesn't have to be that way.

If you want the life of the empress to be staged a little more courageously, you can watch the RTL series "Sisi" or the historical drama "Corsage". And then, of course, there's the famous 1955 film adaptation starring Romy Schneider. But you shouldn't expect a really critical look at the monarchy from any of the empresses.
