Víctor Erice's return to feature films and the leap into the void of those known as Los Javis capitalize on the Feroz Awards, one could say with arrogance. 'Close Your Eyes', the film presented at Cannes amid perhaps unnecessary controversies, gets nominations in all possible categories except one (leading actress) and 'The Messiah', the series premiered in San Sebastian with a bang, reaches a paroxysm and gets 11 nominations in the six categories for which it was eligible. In the category of leading actress, for example, she holds the record for Lola Dueñas, Macarena García and Ana Rujas. That being the case, it would seem that everything seems to have been awarded in advance, at least very lopsided. Rarely have the favourites been so much so at a gala that will take place on January 26.

In the film section, they closely follow the film that completes in the form of a prodigious diptych the adventure begun by the director 50 years ago in 'The Spirit of the Beehive', two films also premiered at an international festival. '20,000 Species of Bees', by Estíbaliz Urresola, premiered in Berlin and 'Un amor', by Isabel Coixet, in San Sebastián. The two reach the final with seven mentions each, followed by four by Spain's candidate for the Oscars: 'The Snow Society', by Juan Antonio Bayona.

Of particular note is the rare combination of directors who have almost always been there (Erice, Bayonne and Coixet) with newcomers such as Urresola, Elena Martín (who is up for best director for the irrefutable 'Creatura'); Alejandro Rojas and Juan Sebastián Vásquez (duo directors of the intesa 'Uppon entry') or Alejandro Marín ('I'm Loving You Madly'). That and the three nominations for an animated film like Pablo Berger's 'Robot Dreams', which is on the list of best comedies of the year.

In the series section, along with the excess of 'The Messiah', the other big surprise of the year: the comedy outside of any definition or category 'Poquita fe', by Pepón Montero and Juan Maidagán. It's the comedy of the year (it has six nominations) of those to come.

Ana Rujas, Lola Dueñas and Carmen Machi in 'The Messiah'.
