In a trial in which four members of Doshisha University's American football team were accused of sexually assaulting a female university student who was drunk and unable to resist, the Kyoto District Court sentenced all four to 4 years and 4 months in prison, saying, "It was a despicable and malicious crime and the attitude of completely disrespecting the victim's personality is worthy of strong condemnation."

Four defendants, Yuki Katai (4), Yugo Yamada (22), Ken Hamada (22), and Ryo Makino (23), who were fourth-year students at Doshisha University and belonged to the American football team, were accused of sexually assaulting a female university student who was too drunk to resist at Katai's home in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City in May last year.

In his ruling on the 23st, Hiroshi Kawakami, the chief judge of the Kyoto District Court, said, "It is a despicable and vicious crime, and the victim's disgust and humiliation are too much to understand.

On top of that, all four were sentenced to three years and six months in prison, saying, "Although they have been subjected to not insignificant social sanctions such as expulsion from the university and the cancellation of job offers, they cannot escape prison sentences."

Asako Ueki, president of Doshisha University, commented, "We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to the victims, their families, and those involved, and apologize for the situation that has caused the foundation of education to be questioned.
