• Music A guitar smashed by Kurt Cobain sells for more than €550,000 at auction

The guitar used by American singer Kurt Cobain during his last concert has been sold at auction for more than $1.5 million, Julien's Auctions announced Friday.

The left-handed Fender Mustang isthe Nirvana frontman's "favorite" guitar and the one he played on the group's last tour from 1993-1994, she said in a statement.

With its sky-blue patina, the instrument that was auctioned off in Nashville, Tennessee, is intact, unlike many of the guitars broken on stage by the grunge legend.

In May, a black Fender Stratocaster smashed by the artist fetched $595,000 in a bid at New York's Hard Rock Cafe.

After leaving his mark on a generation of Nirvana fans with hits such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come as You Are," Cobain committed suicide in April 1994 at the age of 27, after a career marked by heroin addiction and a complex relationship with singer Courtney Love.

On Thursday, Julien's Auctions also sold another guitar, used by Eric Clapton, for nearly $1.3 million.

That Gibson SG, nicknamed 'The Fool' and with personalized and psychedelic decoration, is closely linked to the singer's time in the group Cream, in which he produced one of the most characteristic sounds of rock.
