Two days after Meta announced a subscription for European users to enjoy its ad-free services, the European regulator banned the use of data for targeted advertising.

Norway's ban on "behavioural advertising" imposed on Meta, operator of the Facebook and Instagram platforms, will be extended to all EU countries and the European Economic Area, the European Data Protection Regulator (EDPB) announced on Wednesday.

Two weeks to enforce the ban

The body is asking the data regulator in Ireland, where Meta's European headquarters are located, to take measures "within two weeks" to enforce the ban on this practice "of using (users') personal data for advertising purposes" targeted on the US tech giant's platforms, it said in a statement.
