A German holidaymaker in Mallorca has been seriously injured during a hike. The man is fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of a hospital, it was said on Tuesday. According to the local rescue service Samu 061, the hiker had fallen down a three-meter-deep slope on Monday during an excursion to the Torrent de Pareis gorge and hit his head on a rock.

The attending physicians feared that the German might have suffered a spinal cord injury, his condition was very serious. The Torrent de Pareis gorge is a popular hiking area for holidaymakers in the northwest of the Mediterranean island, which ends at the beach of Sa Calobra.

The unconscious man had been found by the crew of a search helicopter and flown to a hospital. He suffered a cardiac arrest during the flight, but was resuscitated in the plane, the rescue service said. It is not known where the man comes from in Germany. His age was given as being in his late 50s.
