Three Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire on Tuesday (September 19th), the Palestinian Health Ministry said, while the Israeli army announced that it had carried out an operation in the refugee camp in the northern West Bank city.

About 30 people were injured, the ministry added in a statement. The army said a military drone had "struck", without elaborating, in the Jenin camp.

According to a statement issued by his office, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the military raid in Jenin was part of "necessary measures to prevent terrorist activities."

"The situation is not clear. There are sounds of explosions and gunfire and we can't move around," Mahmoud Sadi, director of the Palestine Red Crescent Society in Jenin, told AFP by phone by phone.

Reached by phone at around 21:30 p.m. (18:30 GMT), Jenin's acting governor, Kamal Abu Rob, told AFP that the Israeli army had withdrawn after "targeting a house" recently used to house a Palestinian wanted by Israeli security services.

The Israeli army said it had reacted "to fire against its forces with live ammunition" during an "anti-terrorist operation in the Jenin camp".

In July, the Israeli army carried out a major operation in Jenin, a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups, in which thirteen Palestinians and one soldier were killed.

Since the beginning of the year, the northern West Bank has been the scene of repeated Palestinian attacks on Israelis as well as recurrent violence by Jewish settlers against Palestinians. Jenin and the refugee camp have been repeatedly targeted by Israeli operations.

In the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian was also killed Tuesday by Israeli soldiers near the fence separating Israel from the Palestinian territory under the control of the Islamist movement Hamas, according to local authorities.

"Snipers"

The Israeli army said it had "hundreds of rioters" on the Palestinian side of the fence and said it had used "riot control and snipers" to disperse them, according to a statement.

Meanwhile, the Erez crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip, which was due to reopen on Monday morning, remained closed on Tuesday after a succession of clashes in recent days between young Palestinians and Israeli soldiers stationed on the other side of the fence erected by Israel around the Gaza Strip.

On Tuesday night, Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Roudeina condemned the continued Israeli "aggression."

These incidents come amid an outbreak of violence related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the beginning of the year, particularly in the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

At least 236 Palestinians have been killed since January 1, as well as 28 Israelis, a Ukrainian and an Italian, according to an AFP tally compiled from official sources. These statistics include, on the Palestinian side, combatants and civilians, including minors, and on the Israeli side, the majority of whom are civilians, including minors, and three members of the Arab minority.
