At least four people were killed in floods caused by heavy rainfall in Turkey on Tuesday. In Istanbul, according to the governor, two people died. Two other people were killed in the city of Kirklareli in the northwest of the country, according to the rescue service. Four people were missing.

The streets of Istanbul turned into raging rivers, a metro station was partially under water after the nightly storm. According to media reports, dozens of people had to be brought to safety from a city library.

Floods follow extremely dry summer

Pictures of cars and market stalls washed away by the masses of water could be seen on television and online networks.

The heavy rainfall follows a particularly dry summer, in which the water level in the water reservoirs of Istanbul, a city of 16 million inhabitants, fell to its lowest level in nine years.
