This year's Newspaper Association Awards for outstanding reporting include NHK's scoop, which provides internal footage and audio of abuse of patients at a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo and reports on the problems faced by psychiatric care in Japan, including illegal physical restraint.
NHK obtained internal footage and audio of nurses assaulting patients at Takiyama Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in Hachioji City, Tokyo, and reported on the police search and entry into the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, as well as a series of news and programs from February to June, including the ETV special feature "Lupo Death Discharge ~Psychiatric Care: The Dark Reality~".
Based on the testimonies of those involved and the list of patients obtained, we expanded our coverage to local governments and other organizations, and through investigative journalism, we identified illegal physical restraints and the fact that about 2% of hospitalized patients died and were discharged Japan and clarified the problems faced by psychiatric care.

The award ceremony will be held at a newspaper convention in Nagano Prefecture on the 6th of next month.
