At the scene of the accident on an arterial road near the outskirts of Hanover, only the destroyed wrecks were visible: After a head-on collision in the Marienwerder district on Monday, four people are dead. A 20-year-old succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday in hospital, according to police in Hanover.

With the death of the man who was in a Nissan involved, the death toll has risen to four. A 17-year-old was still in mortal danger, it said.

According to police, the car, driven by a 19-year-old, had come into the oncoming lane for an initially unexplained reason and collided head-on with another vehicle.

Six young people in the vehicles

In the cars were, therefore, three young men and women aged 17 to 21 years. According to the fire department, the vehicles were "severely deformed" by the force of the impact. Two occupants were trapped and had to be freed with hydraulic equipment.

Despite the care and resuscitation measures started by several emergency doctors and numerous rescue workers, the 19-year-old driver of the accident-causing car and his passenger of the same age and the 21-year-old passenger of the other car died on the spot.
