Police operation at a school in Bischofswerda

A student armed with a knife seriously injured an eight-year-old boy on Wednesday morning at a school in the eastern Saxon town of Bischofswerda. The 16-year-old attacker was overwhelmed and is in hospital, police said. The situation is under control. Previously, according to police, a amok alarm had been triggered.

The police were on site in the morning with a large contingent. The emergency call was received by the police at around 9.45 a.m. A special task force arrived. The school building was evacuated. The students were brought to safety. A crisis intervention team looked after the children and adolescents. In the morning, the police gave the all-clear that the situation was under control.

Injured child flown to hospital

According to the Saxon Ministry of Culture, the injured child was flown by helicopter to a clinic. The boy's condition is stable. It was a third-grader who had been injured in the head and neck.

The background to the crime was initially unclear. The school complex houses a primary school and a secondary school. Bischofswerda is located east of Dresden in the district of Bautzen.
