BEIJING, June 6 (Zhongxin.com) -- Comprehensive university rankings have always been full of controversy, pointing to the evaluation system of the rankings, and in recent years, some domestic and foreign universities have announced their withdrawal from the university rankings.

On the afternoon of June 6, China News Service, China News Network, and Zhongxin Education held the third live broadcast of the college entrance examination series. Cheng Ying, founder of the Ranking, Zhang Ming, president of iArrow Think Tank and former China Director of QS Global Education Group, and Xiong Bingqi, education scholar and dean of the 9st Century Education Research Institute, discussed how to rank the university rankings and what do you think?

Use rankings to reveal university characteristics and strengths

Every year during the college entrance examination season, parents and candidates pay attention to the university rankings, and the results of different lists are often different.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), QS World University Rankings, THE Higher Education World University Rankings, and U.S. News World University Rankings are regarded as the four most influential global university rankings at present.

Cheng Ying, founder of the Rankings of Soft Sciences, introduced that nearly 300 indicators are selected for the major rankings of Soft Sciences, reflecting the content of all aspects of the university. Of course, he said, there are some things that are difficult to quantify, such as the quality of talent training, but some approximate indicators can be selected. The world's mainstream university rankings are made according to the same logic, through ranking means to reveal the characteristics and advantages of universities, "if a university believes that under our set of logic, the advantages have not been fully displayed, there is every reason to announce the withdrawal".

Zhang Ming, president of iEritech Think Tank and former China director of QS Global Education Group, believes that the ranking is subjective, and there are great differences in the level of education in different countries and regions, and it is difficult to measure with the same set of indicators.

She believes that the best indicator should be the choice of students, "if students through university studies, they have a more positive impact on personal growth, family and even the community and city where they live, this is the best indicator."

No university ranking is 100% perfect

"No university is 100% perfect in its rankings." Zhang said, "University rankings use common indicators, but for students and parents, more attention is paid to the development of personality. Some people attach importance to the level of software and hardware facilities of the school, and some people think that indicators such as scientific research strength, teaching level, innovation ability, and alumni network are more important. Zhang Wei believes that the biggest significance of university rankings is to help schools find good comparison objects and continuously promote their own development.

Xiong Bingqi believes that the university ranking is a social evaluation of the university, facing the public, and in the process of making the ranking, in order to find out the obvious, accessible and comparable indicators, some professional factors will be ignored. University rankings have more media functions, which are the basis for educated people to choose universities and social institutions to choose partners. Universities can use university rankings as a reference for schools, but they cannot "only rank", which is the rational way to treat university rankings.

When filling out the volunteers, the university rankings are only a reference for the bottom

Zhang Wei believes that when filling in the volunteers, the university ranking is only a very low reference. Voluntary reporting should be based on a combination of factors.

Xiong Bingqi said that all provinces in China have achieved the knowledge of points, lines and positions after the college entrance examination, which is a very clear basis for voluntary reporting. It is also important for candidates to be interested in which schools and majors they are interested in in matching their scores and rankings. He said that candidates and parents usually fill out the college entrance examination volunteer with "not wasting a point", which actually reflects that they still do not plan for the future based on the candidates' interests and hobbies.

At the end of the live broadcast, Xiong Bingqi sent a message to the candidates to choose the school they are really interested in among the schools within their ability.

Cheng Ying also believes that "the key is that everyone can find their own interests, and stick to it for a long time, and achieve their own development in this direction."

Zhang Wei mentioned "pragmatism", she believes that in the next 3 to 5 years, there will be new jobs will continue to emerge, always through lifelong learning, modular learning, and constantly improve workplace competitiveness, "At present, everyone should not think so far for the time being, first solve the problem in front of you, this is more practical."
