This time, we participated in the "Belt and Road" people-to-people project to eliminate cataracts, and went to Po Veng province in Cambodia to provide cataract surgery services to (local) patients.

【Commentary】 To provide medical and public health humanitarian assistance to countries along the "Belt and Road", the Sharing Foundation (GX) has prepared and promoted a number of public health humanitarian assistance projects since its establishment in 2018, "Cataract Blindness Elimination Project" is one of them, from September 2022 to now, Sharing Foundation has successfully helped more than 9,2500 cataract patients in Laos, Cambodia and Djibouti to see again.

From early March to mid-May this year, medical students Yang Zhuoshi and Li Waiqi traveled to Laos and Cambodia as interns of the Shared Foundation to assist the Guangxi medical team in preparing for cataract treatment surgery, triage of patients and preoperative examination. Yang Zhuoshi spent 10 days as an intern in Po Vang Province in Cambodia in April this year, during which she assisted in field work such as stocktaking and transporting supplies. She admits that it is not easy to complete the operation for local patients, and the local work is full of challenges, such as the early sorting and delivery of materials, which is a matter of every second, and it is also very physically challenging, and it is necessary to overcome the language barrier.

Because we also went to the local area, I really realized that because in Cambodia they speak Khmer, Khmer is completely different from the language we speak, they (patients) may sometimes not understand the doctor's instructions, there may be some communication challenges, so we bought some buttons, those buttons have a recording function, we asked the local translator to help record a few words, which are some words that are commonly used by their doctors. And then the doctors and nurses were happy to see that those buttons really worked.

Li Huiqi told reporters that she decided to study medicine when she was in middle school, hoping to go out to help people in need in different countries, and this experience also strengthened her belief.

Some patients have some very unexpected requests, once it was (there) a patient who completed the operation and then he came out, and when he thanked me, he asked us to take off the mask, we had no idea why he asked me to take off the mask, it turned out that he started to see, he wanted to see the people who helped him during the [treatment], he wanted to see us clearly.

Yang Zhuoshi told reporters that this project had many unforgettable experiences, especially eating and living with the Guangxi medical team for more than ten days, and the members of the two sides established a deep friendship.

In addition to work, we also have a lot of happy memories with the (Guangxi) medical team in our lives, they will take good care of us, for example, in our lives, we may not have so much food, they will say we eat together, we cooked you eat with me. Therefore, I feel very happy with the Guangxi medical team in terms of work and life.

Li Huiqi said that this year coincides with the 10th anniversary of the "Belt and Road" initiative, and she believes that it is very meaningful for our country to share our medical resources, technology and talents with neighboring countries.

Our country has its own humanitarian aid organization, which can share its resources and technology with the "Belt and Road" countries to help the people of those developing countries.
