At the Aqua World Ibaraki Oarai Aquarium in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, a baby sand tiger, an endangered shark, was born in May.

According to the Oarai Aquarium, a female shark "sand tiger" gave birth to a child on May 5.

The baby born is a female with a body length of more than 7 cm and weighs about 90 kg.

The sand tiger shark is a large shark that lives in the waters near Japan and grows to a total length of about 5 meters, and is considered to be at high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future according to the Ministry of the Environment's Red List of Marine Organisms.

According to the aquarium, the sand tiger shark has been successfully bred in only five aquariums in the world due to the difficulty of fertilization itself, so it is the second time since it was successfully bred in the same Oarai Aquarium in Japan.

The baby sand tiger tiger is currently growing well in a tank that is not open to the public, and in the future, they aim to open it to the public while observing their growth status, and to exhibit them in a tank with the sand tiger, which is their older sister, who was born as an adult.

Kotaro Tokunaga, who is in charge of raising sharks, said, "I'm honestly happy that the second breeding was successful, and it's precious to be able to see the endangered babies, so I hope you will come and see how cute they are."
