• Health What you should do before taking that first shot of beer you love so much
  • Wellness Are you sure that moderate alcohol consumption is your thing?

Whether beer is fattening or not is one of the key questions asked by fans of this fermented drink that, by the way, is one of the most consumed by Spaniards away from home.

Beer has a millenary tradition, it is made from barley and other cereals and eye, it is an alcoholic beverage, so it can be consumed, yes, but in moderation.

In the XIII edition of the Scientific Conference on Fermented Beverages and Health framed within the Chair of Fermented Beverages of the Complutense University of Madrid. The conference, under the title Fermented beverages, diet and health: an update for 2022, yielded conclusions by professors César Nombela and Humberto Martín such as that "this type of drinks (wine, beer and cider), can be enjoyed by those who consume them in a moderate way, preferably simultaneously with food, within a healthy diet and lifestyle. And all this as long as they are healthy adults."

Having clarified this matter, let's return to what many worry about: Is beer fattening or not?

Is beer fattening?

  • Beer has few calories and low saturated fat. The exact amount is 43 calories per 100 ml. So, if you drink a 250 ml glass, you are ingesting about 90 calories. A cane, which is smaller, has about 75 calories.
  • Therefore, it is considered a low-calorie drink and should not affect weight if taken in moderation. Nothing you can't eliminate with a little exercise or a brisk walk.
  • Keep in mind that most sugary soft drinks that we drink sometimes to avoid having a beer, are much fatter.
  • Eye, if when you drink a beer, you snack on some appetizers (olives, potatoes, snacks, some fried ...) you will have to add calories, but do not attribute them all to beer.
  • The more natural and artisanal beer, the healthier. The dark beer, made from malt and hops, and rich in iron is one of the healthiest.
  • How much can we take? A moderate consumption is about one-third for women and two for men. This measurement is valid for healthy adults with a body mass index between 19 and 25, that is, the one that indicates a normal weight level. In the case of people with overweight, cardiovascular problems, obesity or other conditions, alcohol consumption should be zero.
  • A trick: many times we drink a beer just to quench our thirst and we don't even taste it. It is advisable to satiate ourselves with water and then drink the beer. This way we will consume less and gain less weight too.
