Amis died on Friday at his home in Florida, USA. His wife, author Isabel Fonseca, told The New York Times that Amis died of esophageal cancer.

Martin Amis, son of the writer Kingsley Amis, was seen in his homeland as one of the great literary voices of his generation and often wrote with a satirical edge.

He made his debut as a writer in 1973 and achieved his greatest success in the 1980s. Two of his best-known novels, "Money" and "Woman Seeks Her Killer", give a critical picture of life in Britain under Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

The news of Ami's death comes a day after the film adaptation of his novel "The zone of interest" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Like the novel, the acclaimed film is about a commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp and his family.
