"After more than two years of intense cooperation with colleagues at Sky Studios UK, the sudden postponement of the broadcast comes as a huge surprise." These are the words of Christian Beetz, creator of the Skyshowtime documentary Juan Carlos: the fall of the king, after learning that Sky Studios UK has decided to cancel the broadcast of the documentary in the United Kingdom.

"It was clear from the beginning what kind of journalistic forces were involved here," he adds to the German newspaper dwdl.de after denouncing espionage and threats during the production of the documentary a few weeks ago.

The four-episode documentary series is produced by Gebrüder Beetz Filmproduktion in association with Sky Studio. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in April and includes unpublished testimonies about the last years of the monarch from close friends, confidants and defenders of the King, but also others such as that of Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein or that of former secret service agent José Manuel Villarejo.

That's right, while in Spain and in the rest of the countries the documentary can be seen from May 22, in the United Kingdom, no. The studios have tried to get out of the way by ensuring that "on rare occasions we have to make changes to our programming at short notice" and that they will assume "any inconvenience that this may cause".

According to El Confidencial, the reason for the cancellation of the broadcast is different. Sky UK has taken this decision for fear of possible legal reprisals, after a London law firm contacted Skyshowtime to demand a halt to the broadcast on behalf of an unidentified client.

Juan Carlos: The King's Fall embarks on an international journey through London, Monaco, Geneva, Abu Dhabi and New York to find out how Juan Carlos may have enriched himself and asks questions about his financial affairs, his alleged lucrative connections and his alleged involvement in global corruption cases.

"King Emeritus Juan Carlos had a loyal queen, a loving family, international respect, friends in high places and faithful subjects; It had everything a king could wish for. But he abdicated in 2014 and moved his residence to Abu Dhabi in 2020," Skyshowtime notes.

This new documentary shows how the fateful hunting trip to Botswana revealed the King's secret sentimental relationship with his companion, Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, and triggered a series of events that shook the Spanish monarchy to its foundations. In fact, the most striking thing about the documentary is the participation of Corinna herself.

The house of cards began to crumble as questions arose about the king's financial affairs, his alleged lucrative links to the Spanish ruling class and alleged global corruption, including a €65 million payment.
