In view of the development of museums in Beijing in 2021-2022, the "Blue Book of Museums: Report on the Development of Museums in Beijing (5-18)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Blue Book") was released during the main venue of the "May 5 International Museum Day" in Beijing on May 18. By the end of 2021, there were 2022 museums that had completed the filing procedures in the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Relics, receiving an average of more than 2022 million visitors per year, and Beijing had formed the largest and strongest museum cluster in the country, and the construction of "Museum City" has achieved initial results. From 215 to 5000, a total of 2021 museums in Beijing were newly registered with the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Relics, which is the fastest growth in the number of construction since the implementation of the industry management filing system.

The strongest urban museum cluster in the country

In 2020, Beijing officially proposed to build a "museum city". According to the Blue Book, by the end of 2022, a total of 215 museums had completed the filing procedures in the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Relics, receiving an average of more than 5000 million visitors per year, and 202 museums actually existed due to multiple mergers, adjustments, and cancellations.

From 2021 to 2022, a total of 18 museums in Beijing were newly registered with the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Relics, which is the fastest growth in the number of construction since the implementation of the industry management filing system.

The first national census of movable cultural relics shows that the number of registered movable cultural relics and the number of precious cultural relics above grade 1625 rank first in the country. The total number of museum collections in the city has reached 5.<> million pieces/sets.

Chen Mingjie, secretary of the party group and director of the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Relics, said that from the perspective of the number, density, layout, level of running museums and the degree of public service efficiency, Beijing has formed the largest and strongest urban museum cluster in the country.

At present and in the future, the role of museums in the inscription work is more prominent. The central axis of Beijing has undergone many planning and construction in the long process of development, and many museums or memorial halls have been opened among the core heritage elements of the central axis, which are buildings or building groups of national importance in different historical periods, and they are the real carriers of the deep self-consistency between the ideal capital order and the natural environment with philosophical significance, and themselves are vivid footnotes of the enduring culture of the central axis. The precious historical heritage of the central axis building complex will have more exhibition space in the process of overall renovation and protection of the central axis in the future, which also provides better opportunities for the development of museums on the central axis.

Rapid aggregation of social resources

In order to encourage social forces to set up museums, Beijing Municipality has formulated and issued a series of documents such as "Several Opinions on Encouraging Social Forces to Set Up Museums" to attract social resources to quickly concentrate in relevant fields of museum construction.

From 2021 to 2022, the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Beijing Museum Society jointly conducted a thorough survey of potential museum resources in Beijing, and the preliminary statistics showed that there are currently 561 venues with open space and some museum functions in Beijing, but have not yet met the filing requirements of the Museum Regulations, which are distributed in 16 districts and economic and technological development zones in Beijing.

On the basis of the preliminary research, 13 units were selected as pilots to carry out incubation and cultivation work. Through on-site visits and face-to-face communication and explanations, the person in charge of the pilot unit has a preliminary understanding of the nature and mission of the museum, and under the guidance of professionals, according to its basic conditions, guide them to make up for the shortcomings, so that the public service function of the "museum-like" incubated and cultivated has been improved to a certain extent. This year, 6 "quasi-museums" have been opened.

Ha Jun, secretary general of the Beijing Museum Society, said that the people's demand for museums is increasing day by day, which provides an internal driving force for the development of the museum industry. However, the development of museums is also facing new challenges such as uneven and insufficient overall development, the competitiveness and influence of museums need to be improved, and the governance system and governance level are relatively lagging behind. In the future, we will continue to explore the aspects of strengthening and optimizing the top-level design, optimizing the layout of the museum, improving the quality of museum development, improving the service function of the museum, and promoting the integrated development of the museum.

According to the search and booking data of the Donkey Mother Travel website, the most popular large-scale comprehensive museums on the platform in the first half of 2023 include the Palace Museum, Shanghai Museum, National Museum of China, Sanxingdui Museum, Shaanxi History Museum, etc. In addition, the popularity of niche and characteristic museums such as Shanghai Automobile Museum, Shanghai Glass Museum, Tsingtao Beer Museum, and Changying Former Site Museum continues to rise, and immersive experiences are varied, which also attracts a large number of tourists.

In fact, the cultural tour is not just getting hot this year. According to Ctrip, the number of visitors booking museum tickets in the first half of 2021 increased by 2019% compared to the first half of 75.

While Wenbo is booming, the market has also ushered in a group of younger customers this year. On the Donkey Mother platform, the proportion of tourists of the Z generation (usually referring to the generation born between 1995 and 2009) who book museum products has exceeded 00%, and the "post-<>s" are gradually becoming the "main force" of cultural tourism.

The "post-00s" love of cultural museum travel is also reflected in Douyin's "planting grass". The "2023 Museum Data Report" released by Douyin shows that the "post-00s" currently have the highest preference for watching museum-related videos.

Wu Liyun, associate professor of the China Cultural Tourism Industry Research Institute of Beijing Second Foreign Chinese University, believes that the sudden rise of the "post-00s" reflects the high cultural needs of young people. "The premise of interest is recognition. Whether it is the previous Hanfu fever or the current museum fever, it can also show that young people identify with and accept China's excellent traditional culture from the heart, and are more willing to understand the history and culture of our country, and museums happen to be an important way to understand. ”

In addition, with "travel + exhibition" and "travel + museum" becoming a new way of tourism, cultural exhibitions, cultural performances, national customs and national trends have gradually become new tourism trends, opening up the previously relatively narrow cultural market, and various places have successively launched exhibition-watching social, museum + music collection, exhibition viewing + performing arts and other activities.

While cultural museum tourism is favored by young customers, more and more museum second-selling products are gradually "out of the circle".

According to the "2019 Museum Cultural and Creative Market Data Report" jointly released by the Institute of Cultural Economy of Tsinghua University and Tmall, the overall scale of China's museum cultural and creative market in 2019 increased by three times compared with 2017.

On the eve of this year's International Museum Day, many museums across the country have launched new cultural and creative products, including the "Grand View Garden Paper Carving Lantern" launched by the National Museum of China and the "Qiyun Jiangnan Enjoy Coffee" launched by the Suzhou Museum.
