The police shot at a man during an operation in a refugee shelter in Hanover and seriously injured him. The man is said to have approached the forces with a knife and did not react when he was approached, a police spokeswoman said.

"A firearm was used," the spokeswoman said. "The person is seriously injured and is now in hospital." Police forces were not injured.

According to the information, the police were called to the refugee shelter in the Vinnhorst district at 6.48 a.m. because a person is said to have violated the house rules. The exact background of the incident was still unclear, and the police did not initially provide any information on the identity of the injured person.
