Maïwenn was invited on the set of "Quotidien" on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 to talk about "Jeanne du Barry", her new film with Johnny Depp, which will be screened in preview at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16. Recently accused of assaulting Edwy Plenel in a restaurant, the director gave her version of the facts.

A month after being accused by Edwy Plenel of assaulting her in a restaurant, Maïwenn finally broke her silence. Invited on the set of Quotidien on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 on the occasion of the release of her film Jeanne du Barry, presented at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, the director was questioned by Yann Barthès about the complaint filed against her by the journalist-founder of Mediapart. "Do I confirm that I assaulted him or that I received the complaint?" she initially reacted.

Maïwenn confirms assaulting Edwy Plenel

Maïwenn Le Besco then confided with a big smile that she had not "yet received the complaint". She later confirmed that she had assaulted Edwy Plenel, without giving further details. "Why can't we know why?" asked Yann Barthès. "It's tempted, but this is not the time for me to talk about it... I'll talk about it when it's the right time," Maïwenn replied, laughing.

A "spit on his face"

In his complaint filed on March 7 and consulted by AFP, Edwy Plenel explained that on February 22, while dining with a lawyer in a restaurant in the 12th arrondissement, "a woman, previously seated, alone, at another table (...) had arisen and in a very short space of time had seized him by the hair with violence, throwing his head back and spitting on his face".

If Maïwenn did not wish to explain why she had assaulted Edwy Plenel, it is certainly the articles published by Mediapart on the suspicions of rape against Luc Besson, her former companion and father of one of her children, which could have motivated her action.
