British actor Terrence Hardiman has died at the age of 86, according to the agency Scott Marshall Partners, which communicated the death "with great sadness" and described him as a "dear client and a much-loved stage and film actor".

Hardiman experienced his greatest success in the 1990s with the starring role in the CBBC series The Demon Headmaster, in which he managed to scare an entire generation of teenagers with his piercing gaze.

The fiction was based on the children's books of Gillian Cross, who mourned Hardiman's death on her Twitter account: "Very sad to learn that Terrence Hardiman has died. He was a wonderful actor on television, stage and screen and a great Demon Headmaster. My deepest condolences to his family and friends."

Terrence Hardiman, married to actress Rowena Cooper, also appeared in series with Doctor Who, The Crown, Wallander and Prime Suspect.
