Columbia University on Monday announced the winners and finalists of the 2023 Pulitzer Prizes, awarded on the recommendation of the Pulizter Prize Board, where three Ukrainian journalists, Mstyslav Chernov, Evgeniy Maloletka and Vasilisa Stepanenko, have won the decoration for coverage of the war in Ukraine from Mariupol for the Associated Press. Likewise, journalist Lori Hinnant has been recognized with the same award.

The finalists in the Journalism (public service) category were the Austin American-Statesman, in collaboration with USA Today Network and The Washington Post.

The four journalists covered the siege of Mariupol during Russia's invasion of Ukraine for the Associated Press. Maloletka, in particular, took a photograph of a woman injured as a result of the bombing at the maternity hospital that won World Press Photo of the Year (the image illustrating this information).

Chernov is also a Ukrainian photojournalist, filmmaker, war correspondent and novelist known for his coverage of the Revolution of Dignity or the War in Donbas.

For her part, Vasilisa Stepanenko has also been the winner of the ICFJ Award, George Polk Award and Royal Television Society Award, for her work as a video producer.

The three Ukrainian reporters were the last international journalists on the ground to document the situation in Mariupol as Russian forces approached the city.

In addition, with Associated Press journalist Lori Hinnant, the team brought the reality captured by their objectives of the war in Ukraine to an international audience, according to the Center for Journalistic Ethics on its website.
