Even before Loreen won Melodifestivalen with the entry "Tattoo", she was tipped to take home the entire Eurovision song contest.

Tonight she kept up the pressure and advanced in the first semi-final of the competition. Now she has the chance to give Sweden a historic seventh victory.

Nordic domination

The evening offered a Nordic success as Finland's Käärijä was met with huge cheers in the arena and got the whole audience to sing along during their performance. He is also qualified for the final and has also been pointed out as the real challenger to Loreen for the victory.

The long-time pre-favourite, Norway's Alessandra with the entry "Queen of Queens" was the last to be called out but also took in a place in the final.

Israel's poppy Noa Kirel and Croatian Let 3 also made it further.

Flop for the lullabies

But as is well known, there will not be finals for everyone. Some of the entries whose Eurovision journey already ended tonight are Malta's dancey "Dance (our own party") and Latvia's rocking lullaby "Aijā".

Sweden can also see itself freed from the competition for the most Eurovision wins that was Ireland. The entry Wild Youth did not make it further.

France favourites tipped

15 numbers competed in tonight's first semi-final and ten have now advanced to the final.

Italy, France and Germany from "The Big Five" also appeared in tonight's broadcast, where French La Zarra's "Évidemment" is currently fourth with the gaming companies to take home the entire Eurovision song contest.

Semifinal 2 will be shown on SVT at 21.00 on Thursday and then 16 entries will compete.
