The RTVE Corporation has transmitted to Twitter its "total disagreement" with the unilateral decision of the social network to include the media label financed by the Government in the corporate accounts of the Corporation: RTVE, RTVE News, RTVE Communication and Participation and RTVE Play.

These labels on RTVE accounts on Twitter "are erroneous and contrary to the essence of Radiotelevisión Española," says the public entity in a statement, after the social network has established in the last hours said label. The Corporation reiterates "editorial independence" as one of its "hallmarks".

According to Twitter's explanation of who is labeled, the social network ensures that "state-affiliated media are defined as media where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures or control over production and distribution." Thus, he continues, "accounts belonging to state-affiliated media entities, their editors-in-chief and their higher-level staff can be tagged."

"

RTVE is a public media that is financed through an allocation of the general budgets approved by parliament, he continues, and adds, "as well as by two other sources of financing of a private nature."

The Public Corporation states that "the editorial independence and the workers of RTVE" by the Government or any body or representative of the Public Administration "is covered by Law 17/2006, of June 5, on state-owned radio and television".

Twitter explains that "government-funded media are defined as media outlets that are partially or fully funded by the government and that exhibit varying degrees of government involvement in editorial content."

Therefore, from the RTVE Corporation has asked Twitter to withdraw the label half financed by the Government and, where appropriate, be replaced by publicly funded media. "We hope that this request will be addressed as soon as possible," concludes the public entity.
