A police operation is underway on Tuesday, April 18, in Jerusalem to try to find the perpetrator of an alleged "terrorist attack" against the passengers of a car.

Magen David Adom, Israel's equivalent of the Red Cross, said the wounded, two men, continued to drive after the attack on their vehicle shortly before 07:10 a.m. (04:10 GMT) in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of annexed East Jerusalem and reported it to police before being picked up by emergency services.

The neighborhood was cordoned off and AFP journalists saw large numbers of heavily armed security forces deployed there.

The shooting took place near a Jewish pilgrimage site. Sheikh Jarrah has been at the heart of tensions in 2021 between residents and Israeli settlers trying to gain ground.

The attack comes as Israel marks Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Police said they found what they said was the submachine gun used by the attacker.

An AFP journalist saw police officers enter a Palestinian house surrounded by security forces as a drone flew overhead.

The attack comes amid renewed violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has recently been marked by deadly attacks, rocket fire from Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, followed by Israeli retaliation.
