A photograph titled 'Pseudomnesia: The Electrician', has been awarded the Sony World Photography Award 2023 last week in the 'Open Creative' category, which rewards creative photos by non-professional photographers.

The author of the image, the German artist Boris Eldagsen, has stated on his website that he entered the contest "to find out if the contests are prepared for the participation of images created with AI". "They are not," he concluded.

He has also asked his followers: "How many of you knew or suspected that it was generated by AI?

"AI-created images and photographs should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore, I will not accept the prize," added the artist, who has stated that he hopes that with his victory and his refusal to accept the prize the debate on what can or cannot be considered as a photograph can be advanced.

The organizer of the contest, the World Photography Organization has removed Eldagsen's image from its website but has not spoken publicly on the matter.
