In Tunisia, departures by sea are multiplying with an increase of 226% compared to the same period last year according to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Tunisians and sub-Saharan migrants are increasingly attempting the crossing, particularly in the eastern city of Sfax.

With1,50 kilometers of coastline, the city has become the hub for departures to Europe. While European countries such as Italy are sounding the alarm about the risk of a migration crisis by the summer, Tunisian authorities are finding it increasingly difficult to contain the flows.
