【Commentary】 "Fuchun Mountain Residence Map" is an ink painting on paper created by Yuan dynasty painter Huang Gongwang in 1350, depicting the early autumn scenery on both sides of Fuchun Mountain in Zhejiang, and is known as one of the top ten famous paintings in China, which was later divided into two sections due to fire. Recently, the reporter learned from Shaanxi Normal University that the scientific research team of Professor Wu Xiaojun of the School of Computer Science of the school used AI (artificial intelligence) technology to completely restore the "Fuchun Mountain Residence Map" for the first time.

Sun Zengguo, a staff member of the scientific research team, who is responsible for the restoration of the "Fuchun Mountain Residence Map", told reporters that during the restoration, the two existing paintings of the "Leftover Mountain Map" and the "Useless Master Scroll" were used to scan the pictures, analyze the paintings through the computer, and then render the stitching pattern.

Sun Zengguo said that the difficulty of this work lies in the beginning of repairing the first half of the "leftover mountain map", because there is no relevant image data in the existing authentic work, the researchers refer to the Ming Dynasty calligraphy painter Shen Zhou based on memory of the "Imitation Huanggongwang Fuchun Mountain House Map", through the establishment of a data model, and finally use AI technology to completely restore.

Although Shen Zhou's own ink use, various dotting methods and Huang Gongwang may be different, in fact, there is a difference, but this structure, contour and composition elements should be similar, we are grasping this point and seeing the opportunity to repair the burned (painting), so there are later steps. That is to say, we first learn, or test, the structure of Shen Zhou's copy of its landscape paintings, such as the outline of the mountain, the trend of the tree, the flow of water, and the appearance of small bridges and houses. After learning it, we used it as a benchmark and then learned to transfer it to the style of our original "Fuchun Mountain House Map", and finally completed this restoration as a whole.

【Commentary】In the Key Laboratory of Folk Song Intelligent Computing and Service Technology of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism located in Shaanxi Normal University, the reporter saw the restored replica of the "Fuchun Mountain Residence Map", and the scroll was unfolded nearly 8 meters. From the model construction and dataset training of AI repair, to the printing of the restored paintings, the scientific research team spent more than a year.

Wu Xiaojun, director of the Key Laboratory of Folk Song Intelligent Computing and Service Technology and Ministry of Culture and Tourism and professor of the School of Computer Science of Shaanxi Normal University, said that the use of AI technology to restore the "Fuchun Mountain Residence Map" is an achievement of the laboratory in the integration of science and technology and culture. The success of this digital restoration is of great significance to artificial intelligence in the development and inheritance of cultural resources and the digital protection of cultural resources.

Through the study of a style, we can take the missing parts of the ancient painting and can repair it. In addition, we can also supplement the missing text through the style of calligraphy of calligraphy works. So this time we restored this "Fuchun Mountain Residence Map", which was restored by several researchers led by Professor Sun Zengguo and his work after more than a year of efforts. Now they continue to study more deeply and restore more artifacts.
