Two civilians were killed on Tuesday (April 4th) in an Israeli strike in Syria, the fourth such attack in less than a week, Syria's state news agency SANA reported. "At 00:15 (21:15 GMT Monday) the Israeli enemy carried out an airstrike ... and the attack resulted in the death of two civilians," SANA quoted a military source as saying.

Israeli strikes were launched from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and "targeted areas in the vicinity of Damascus and in the southern region," SANA said, adding that Syrian air defense intercepted "most of them."

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), "Israeli missiles targeted the area of Damascus International Airport, an Iranian compound near the Sayyidah Zeinab area" and another location in al-Kiswah.

At least two of the missiles were intercepted, added the SOHR, a London-based organization that has an extensive network of sources in Syria. According to SOHR director Rami Abdel Rahman, in addition to the two civilians, "an unknown number of pro-Iranian fighters were also killed."

The fourth raid in six days

In recent years, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria against regime positions, but also against those of Iranian and Hezbollah forces, allies of Damascus and sworn enemies of Israel.

This is the fourth Israeli raid on Syria in six days. On the night of Saturday to Sunday, two pro-Iranian fighters were killed and five Syrian soldiers wounded in a raid in Homs, in central Syria. Other raids targeted Damascus on Thursday and Friday.

Syria is ravaged by a civil war, triggered by the 2011 repression of pro-democracy demonstrations and which has become more complex over the years with the intervention of several countries and foreign armed groups.
