An event was held in Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture to harvest cabbages that have become sweeter by storing them under the snow.

This event is held every year by a group made up of local farmers, etc., with the aim of revitalizing the region through hands-on farming experiences.

About 5,000 cabbages were left unharvested in a field of 15 acres covered in snow, and the participants dug up the snow with a shovel and harvested them one by one.

This cabbage had grown large enough to be harvested around last autumn, but by letting it pass the winter under the snow, it stored sugar to withstand the cold, increasing its sweetness and giving it a crunchy texture. It means that you can enjoy

A woman in her 30s who participated with her parents said, "I thought it would be a good experience for my children, so I participated. It was like a treasure hunt and it was fun."

Takuo Kaneko, chairman of the organization that planned the event, said, "We started this event because we wanted to increase the exchange population in areas where the birthrate is declining and the population is aging. We want people to enjoy the bitterness of the cabbage, which has been sweetened to withstand the cold." was talking
