The arrest of a Chinese man suspected of killing a man nearly three decades ago, during which he became a millionaire

Police in southern China have arrested a murder suspect who became a millionaire during the 29 years he was on the run, Chinese media reported today.

The Beijing Youth Daily reported that the suspect, nicknamed "Chong", was wanted by the judiciary for fatally stabbing a man during an altercation in 1993.

Police in Xiangyang City in central China's Hubei Province traveled more than 1,200 kilometers to reach Huizhou City in Guangdong Province and arrested "Chung".

A video report indicated that the police managed to get "Chung" out of his home, where he lives with his elderly mother, by impersonating health workers fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

Guangdong Province is witnessing an upward rise in Covid-19 infections, while its capital, Guangzhou, is the epicenter of the virus.

The report indicated that during the decades after the alleged crime, Chung transformed from an ordinary worker into a millionaire living in a luxury apartment, without mentioning how he accumulated this wealth.

In the report, a police officer is heard telling Chung outside the apartment, "Now you know why we came for you. It's time for you to be punished."
